So it's almost Aug. 1 and the Washington Nationals are 59-40, good for the best record in the National League and second best in all of baseball. The Nationals are four games ahead of the Braves in the NL East and are just one game behind the New York Yankees for the best record in baseball.
The Washington Nationals.
It bears repeating..... The WASHINGTON NATIONALS are one game back from being the best team in baseball.
Either it's much cooler in hell right now or the Mayans were right that 2012 is the end of an age.
You can also insert all your other cliches about pigs flying, raining frogs and rivers running red because something just isn't right when the Washington Nationals are playing as well as they have.
A big part of their success comes from a bullpen that has been solid even without opening day closer Drew Storen, who was lost to the DL early on, only to be replaced with solid setup man Tyler Clippard.
Oh, and I think this may have something to do with it.......
Those relievers reading selections from that specific book makes me think of Major League 2 and Rube's problem with throwing back to the mound and Jake giving him the Fredericks of Holywood catalog to memorize to take his mind off things.
Maybe that's what happening to the Nats.
Also, this gives me a chance to post one of my favorite Rube moments from ML2.
